I recently had the pleasure of working on a musician shoot for the very lovely Josie Florence an unbelievably talented jazz singer songwriter. She was in need of a set of promotional images for her latest EP, Nightingale (check out her out on her website here). I have photographed Josie before so I knew this was going to be a fun session as she is very open to ideas and places her trust in me to use light creatively to get a set of eye catching imagery.
Being a Devon lass Josie was keen to come back to her roots to shoot her images for her album. In particular Topsham was a place of sentimental significance for her so we chose it as our destination for our location shoot. It also happens to be a very beautiful place to photograph!
It was important to make sure that the images hang together as a set so we spent time before the shoot talking through the general feel she wanted to portrait in her imagery. We decided to focus on a summery warm and slightly ethereal look using soft early morning sun. We tied it all together visually by using the same floaty summer dress throughout. With a limited window of time to shoot in we opted for an early morning shoot and headed down to the river in the small hours to get the best of the light! Once the sun was too high in the sky we utilised some nearby shady areas for a more evenly lit and slightly darker look.
I have included a few of my favourites from this musician shoot below.
I recommend you take a listen to Josie’s beautiful voice… even if you are not a Jazz fan you will be entranced… take a listen here … she is so incredibly talented!
